Kōdo Kai is a family-friendly karate club training students from the ages of 8 and up with a focus on the Wadō-Ryu style. 'Kōdo Kai' means 'Luminosity Club' as we believe in helping students shine their brightest. We endeavour to help students reach their martial arts goals and to achieve their full potential, whilst providing a fun and safe environment to practice.
'Karate' means 'Empty (Kara) Hand (Te)' referring to the fact that it is a martial art that practices self-defence using only your body. Sometimes 'Dō' is suffixed (Karate Dō) to mean 'The Way of the Empty Hand'.
As karate spread throughout Japan, it split into different styles (variations). Grandmaster Hironori Ōtsuka (1892–1982) founded the Wadō-Ryū style in 1938, the style we teach at our club today.
Wadō-Ryū means 'The way of (Dō) Harmony (Wa) Style (Ryū)'. Wadō-Ryū distinguishes itself from other styles by focusing on Tai Sabaki (Body management). For instance, by using your opponents attack against them rather than by meeting force with force (hence Harmony).
All of our instructors are Enhanced DBS certified are First Aid and Safeguarding qualified and have a coaching certification from the AMA (Amateur Martial Association) which is the UKs leading martial arts governing body.
